Mersey Tunnels'
Tolls Consultation
You will recall that we issued a Consultation Paper on the 17th
August 2001 which was concerned with the way in which the Mersey
Tunnels' tolls are revised and the use to which the toll income
is applied. This web page allows you to link to a Summary
of Responses to the Consultation paper and to another section
which provides factual responses to some common
misunderstandings.
The Consultation Paper reviewed the current statutory provisions
in relation to the tolls and concluded that they involved procedures
which were time-consuming, with unwelcome side effects and a financial
objective of questionable merit. It proposed to promote new legislation
mainly to introduce a streamlined procedure involving automatic
toll rises in line with inflation, and the application of surplus
toll income to help finance improvements in public transport provision
throughout Merseyside.
The appended Summary of Responses to
the Consultation Paper was considered at a meeting of Merseyside
Passenger Transport Authority on the 23rd November 2001. As a consequence,
Merseytravel has formally deposited a Local Bill in Parliament.
Copies of the Bill will be available in Merseytravel's offices on
the 4th December 2001 onwards for inspection/retention by members
of the public.
